Cassandra Scanlon is a ceramic artist based in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.
Her work is made using traditional wheel throwing, hand-building, and slip casting techniques in various clay bodies. She is inspired by traditional and contemporary forms and aims to craft functional everyday objects that have a sense of wonder, simplicity, and comfort. Currently, in her ceramic practice, she has been exploring Neriage pottery techniques in stoneware incorporating chattered surfaces to create finishes inspired by the natural ephemeral colors and textures found in the land, sky, and sea. She feels the Neriage process allows each piece to be unique despite the repetition of the process on the wheel. It captures the impression of the maker in clay and can be a reflection or embodiment of time and memory. She is also experimenting with larger forms, detailed surface treatments, and molten glass.
Cassandra has a BFA in Fashion Design from the Illinois Institute of Art and a MDes in Designed Objects from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Before studying ceramic and textile design, Cassandra had a long-standing career in technical design and product development in the apparel and homeware industries in New York City.
